Virginia Wine Country 

Spread throughout the central part of Virginia and situated close to the City of Charlottesville is a very nice wine region with an abundance of wineries, B&B's, and good restaurants. The area is also rich in history; lead by the City of Charlottesville which is the home of the University of Virginia, and in consideration of the area's ties to Thomas Jefferson.

There are over 20 wineries around Charlottesville along the Monticello Wine Trail, (www.monticellowinetrail.com). This area is starting to produce some world class wines including varietals that due very well in this region such as Viogner, and Cabernet Franc. Visitors to the area will find small family vineyards as well as larger establishments with restaurants and inns.

One of my favorite wineries to visit is Barboursville Vineyards located at 17655 Winery Road in Barboursville, VA. This Italian winery founded by Gianni Zonin, head of Casa Vinicola Zonin in 1976 produces some very nice wines including several Italian grape varietals including Barbera, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo. This establishment has a nicely appointed tasting room with a very informative staff.

The grounds of the Barboursville Vineyards are not to be missed. make sure to spend some time walking the vineyards and exploring the Barboursville Ruins. This vineyard is a full service romantic destination with a world class restaurant and a very romantic Inn. You can get further information by visiting the website at www.barboursvillewine.com.

Another winery to visit that is close to Barboursville is Horton Cellars located at 6399 Spotswood Trail in Gordonsville. This winery is unique in the amount and types of wines that the owner is cultivating including varietals from France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Horton also makes a very nice Viogner. Charlottesville serves as a good launching point for your winery visits. The historic Downtown Mall is a brick paved pedestrian promenade lined with uniques shops and sidewall cafes. There are many great restaurants and wine bars along the mall including Zocalo a spanish themed restaurants with an extensive wine by the glass menu with selections from the Spanish regions of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Rias Biaxas, as well as selections from Chile, Portugal, and Argentina.

Another good wine option for visitors to the Downtown Mall is "The Tastings of Charlottesville". Located just off of the Mall at 502 East market Street, this establishment is a wine store, wine bar, and restaurant that serves up a large selection of wine by the glass, and half glass. They use a nitrogen injection system in order to maintain a large selection for tasting. You can visit them at www.tastingsofcville.com.

Also located on the Downtown Mall is the Charllotesville Omni Hotel, a very nice hotel which is in a great location,allowing the visitor to stroll the Mall, take in a show at the Paramount Theatre, enjoy some wine and a good meal within walking distance.
